The Chesapeake & Ohio railroad was formed by several smaller railroads in 1869. By 1873 it ran from Richmand, Virginia to Huntington, West Virginia. In 1972 is merged into the Chessie System with the Baltimore & Ohio railroad. Today portions of it now are part of the CSX railroad. The Chesapeake & Ohio railroad traces back to the Louisa Railroad (1836) and the James River & Kanawha Canal Company (1785). It was expanded west to Charlottesville and renamed the Virginia Central Railroad. During the United States Civil War it was a vital line to the Confederate States.
