Elgin, Joliet, & Eastern

The Elgin, Joliet, & Eastern Railway was formed on April 30, 1884, as the Joliet, Aurora, and Northern Railway. In 1891 the E,J,&E purchases the Gardner, Coal City, & Northern Railroad, and the Waukegan and Southwestern Railway. The rail line runs from Waukegan, Illinois to Gary, Indiana. It forms a "C" by-passing the Chicago-Metro Area. In 1988 U.S. Steel and Blackstone Group (majority shareholders of the E,J,&E) formed a company that controlled several other railroads, including the E,J,&E, known as Transtar, Inc. As of 2007 the Canadian National Railroad has offered to by the E,J,&E.
