The Grand Trunk railroad started in November, 1852 with at line from Montreal to Toronto. In it's life it had three subsidiaries, the Central Vermont, Grand Trunk Pacific, and Grand Trunk Western. There was a fourth subsidiary that was never completed. It was the Southern New England Railroad. On January 20, 1923 the Grand Trunk railroad was fully absorbed by the Canadian National Railroad. It is now a holding company for the Canadian National. It holds the assets of the Illinois Central Railroad, Wisconsin Central, and Great Lkes Transportion.
