The Missouri Pacific railroads was started in 1872. This was after a reorganiztion of the Pacific railroad that started in 1851. It at one time advertized itself as the "Only railroad west of the Mississippi". Through the turnof the century, the railroad merged and aquired other railroads and spread through the west and southwest. By the 1980's it had over 11,000 miles of track in a area from Omaha, NE south to the US/Mexico border, Chicago, IL to Pueblo, CO. In December, 1982 it merged with the Union Pacific Railroad and the Western Pacific Railroad. The MoPac id remained until 1997.
