Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific
The Chicago, Rock Island, & Pacific Railroad was a railroad known as "Rock Island" or "The Rock". It started in 1847 as the Rock Island & La Salle Railroad, then renamed the Chicago & Rock Island Railroad. In 1964, the railroad attempted to merge with the Union Pacific, in what became one of the most costly merger attempts. The Rock focused all money into the merge leaving the track in bad condtions. The Union Pacific saw this and backed out of the merge. In 1975, the railroad went into bankruptcy, and was sold piece by piece.
