The Freeburg is located in southeast of Belleville in St. Clair County. It was settled in the 1830's when German migrants from the St. Louis area moved in the area. Freeburg was origianly known as Urbana. When Freeburg, got it's first post office in 1851 the town was renamed to Freeburg, since there was another Urbana in Illinois, in 1859. In 1869 the towns railroad came through. This was a former line of the Illinois Central, and now owned by the Canadian National.
