National City is a company town north of East St. Louis for the St. Louis National Stockyards Company. The stockyard was formed in 1873. With no crossing at the Mississippi River, livestock going west to east had to be unloaded in St. Louis and feried across the Mississippi River to East St. Louis. This provides the place for a major sorting center and rail hub for livestock to head east. The post office arrived after 1885. In 1907 the stockyards was incorporated as National City. Cattle ws served here until 1997 when the town was officialy disolved. |
