The Village of New Athens is located on the Kaskaskia River when it is crossed by Illinois 13, and the Canadian National Railroad (former Illinois Central). The village was plotted out in 1836 and incorporated as Athens in 1866. IN 1868 the towns name was changed in 1868, when it was discovered there was another town in Illinois named Athens. New Athens was home to the Mound City Brewery until 1950. This town has turned out many major league baseball players over the years.
