North Chicago was built on industry. When the rail depot arrived in 1892 it lead to the arrival of industry. Washburn and Moen Manufactuing Company was one of the first. In 1901 the United States Navy came to town and set up camp. This is known as Great Lakes Naval Training. In 1926 a VA hospital opened. This has since moved to the naval base.
