The City of Villa Grove was chartered in 1903. This was first used by the Chicago & Eastern Illinois Railroad since it was half way between Chicago and St. Louis. Today it is still served and a stop along the Union Pacific railroad. The Union Pacific is the current owners of the former Chicago & Eastern Illinois railroad. Illinois 130, passes north-south through Villa Grove.
