Wilmette is located in New Tier Township, Cook County. Business Week ranked this town as the seventh best places to raise a child in the United States. In 1857 a pickle and vinegar factory was built. The Chicago, North Shore, and Milwaukee railroad came through town in 1854, but did not build a station until 1869. The village was incorporated in 1872. In 1824 and 1826, Wilmette annexed the nearby village of Gross Point.
