The City of Wilmington is in the Southwestern Will County. It is home to about 5134 people (2000 Census). This city is located along Illinois 53, Historical U.S. 66, and the Union Pacific Railroad. It is several miles off of Interstate 55. The Kankakee River cuts through town, and with the Mill Race forms a island. Thus the town is nicknames the "Island City". There are several points of interest for Historical U.S. 66. Wilmington was originally founded as Winchester in 1836. In 1838 the name was changed to Wilmington.
