The City of Hammond is located in Northwest Indiana, and Northwest Lake County. The city limits forms a "L" shape. It was incorporated in 1884. The location along Lake Michigan lead farmers and merchents, along with industy to the area. The G.H. Hammond Packing House came here in 1869. In 1918, the Hammond Area was the site of one of the worst circus train wrecks in the nations history. Hammond was home to one of the original teams in the National Football League.
