The City of Traverse City is the county seat of Grand Traverse County. The areas name comes from the name of Grand Traverse Bay, near by. In 1853 the first post office showed up, with the orginal name suggestion as "Grand Traverse City". The post office clerk in Washington D.C., suggested that "Grand" be dropped. This area is the largest producer of tart cherries in the United States.
