Cameron was plotted out in 1855 with the advancement of the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. This was the railroad furthest west. When a Missouri River rail corssing was built at Kansas City, a spur was built from Cameron, south to the bridge. Today, Cameron is the turning point for the Chicago-to-Kansas City Expressway.
