U.S. Federal Route 71

U.S. Federal Route 71 us a north-south highway along the western edge of Arkansas. The U.S. Rt. 71 corridor is being up-graded to a interstate highway. From near Fort Smith north to Missouri, Interstate 540 exists most of the way. As of September 2003, a expressay was being built along this highway from Texarkana, to near the Louisiana State Line.

The Arkansas Highway Commission has taken steps to get the U.S. Rt. 71 corridor re-named Interstate 49. The commission has asked Missouri and Louisiana to join Arkansas named I-49. Arkansas has approved building a 15 miles of the 19.6 mile Bella Vista Bypass as a toll road for $211 million.*
