Michigan State Route 22 is a north-south highway in on both the east and west shores of Leelanau County. This highway enters the Leelanau County from Benzie County, south of Empire, and runs north through Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, to Northport. At Northport, MI St Rt 22 turns and runs south to the Grand Traverse County Line, near Traverse City. On the eastside of the county MI St Rt 22 passes through the Grand Traverse Indian Reservation. This is home to the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. It also runs along the West Arm of the Grand Traverse Bay. MI St Rt 22 crosses the 45th Parellel line twice in Leelanau County; once on each side of the county. MI St Rt 22 passes through the following towns in Leelanau County. Empire
