The City of Knoxville dates back to settlements in 1786. This city was home to the first capital of bot the Southwest Territory and the State of Tennessee. During the American Civil war the city was occupied at various times by both Union and Confederate forces. In 1982, Knoxville hosted the World's Fair. The center point attraction was a 266 foot tall Sunshpere. This is still part of the downtown Knoxville skyline. Knoxville is home to the University of Tennessee, and is a gateway city to the Great Smokey Mountains National Park.
