Experiencing America > Road Trip Year...2004 > The Move > Day 1

Day ONE...
Friday, May 14th, 2004

This so far is the earliest that a road trip has started. To set the scene it was a rainny friday morning, early early morning. 4:45a.m. to be exact. It started from Rustic Saratoga Township, Illinois. Here the journy took us east across Interstate 80 to Wonderful Griffith, Indiana.

Now to Indiana...State #2!!

Shortly after 6:30a.n. we set out along Interstate 65 toward the big metro of Indianapolis. With light to moderate traffic we made excellent time and stopped at Lafayette for some substinace. While enjoying a excellent Big Breakfast Platter we decided to do some shopping at the local discount city.

The Wal*Mart Supercenter in Lafayette. They sell packaged liquor here.

After all the products have been paid for we headed back down the road to Indianapolis. The destination when we arried in town was Clear Channel Radio-Indy. This will make time number two that we at EA have visited here. Alot has changed. The entire facility was under construction. It was being doubled in size.

A temporary sign in front of the building...I guess that explains why we didnt get any free crap...

This is the air studio for WRZX-FM. Is that Mary Poppin's purse??

Here is where all the majic of the Bob & Tom Show happens. (WFBQ-FM Air Studio)
Besides studios we got the nickle tour around the facility and into the hard hat zones...with out hard hats...or flame retarant clothing...

This is the future office area at CCU-Indy. Here sparks started to fall from the ceiling...on us...they burned...

Here are the transmitters for CCU-Indy.
As much fun as it wast in Indanapolis, we headed back out on to this nations interstate highway system. We took Interstate 70 across Eastern Indiana. Here we finally got ahead of the rain storm that we drove in most of the morning.

Now to Ohio...State #3!!

Now let me tell you...Ohio is one long state. As we pushed across Southwestern Ohio the rain was clipping our tails.

Ohio has something with things on sticks.

At Springfield we stpped at a local Cracker Barrel for some fine dinning. This came us a chance to fill up for a long journey. Ohio is one long state. It maybe long...but there is not much to see. Luckly for our entertainment purposes the Tahoe had alot of battery power.

After a few miles we stumbled on Columbus. Now Columbus seemed to be a stop-sign on a blacktop. That was not the case. It was actually a bigger city.

Columbus, Ohio.

On the eastside of Columbus the rain caught up with us. We tried hard to out run it, but city traffic didn't help.

EB I-70 on the eastside of Columbus. NOTE: the rain.

The rain stayed with use off and on through out Ohio.
Once we got about 10 miles east of Interstate 77 we got ahead of the rain again. Near St. Clairsville, we jumped on Interstate 470 to loop down into Wheeling, West Virginia.

Looking south through the hills of Southeastern Ohio from I-470.

The Ohio River Bridge on EB I-470.

Now to West Virginia...State #4!!

This road-trip stands with the shortest trip across West Virginia. The path took not more than 20 miles across the state.

Looking south down the Ohio River from the I-470 bridge.

We also found out the bridge was built in 1978.
West Virginia was mostly all hills and mountains. I-470 took us back to I-70 on the eastside of Wheeling. Nice area with tons of houses on the hillside.

Now to Pennsyalvania...State #5!!

Southwestern Pennsylvania was very simliar to West Virginia. Alot of hills. Our goal was Clear Channel Radio-Pittsburgh by 6 p.m. E.S.T. Acording to the GPS unit we had, we were right on track. We would be getting to Pittsburgh right near the end of evening rush. Once on I-279 we hit traffic. After a few miles we relized it was for a minor fender-bender on the other direction.

If you don't then what happenes?

Now that we finished playing transport, it was time to play moving crew. So we headed to Brackenridge.

NB I-279 at the Fort Pitt Tunnel at Pittsburgh.

Our target was to empty a apartment in a few hours and move it back to Illinois.

A Etna Police car on NB PA St Rt 28. If only the white lights were lit.

We stopped by a local K-Mart, cause it's all in the K. Here we grabbed many plastic totes. As the evening progressed on it was getting near another snakcin' hour. So in the spirit of road trips...we tried some local cusine.

The Eat 'N Park on Freeport Road in Brackenridge. It was sorta like a Park 'N Wait.

After dinner we started to pack a bit then when and found sleeping quarters in the area. The only hotel in the area...was hosting the local prom. It was complete with a full parking lot, tons of people dressed up, and small town police questioning people in a tahoe with Illinois license plates.
