South of Downtown Effingham is the junction between the Canadian National Railroad and the CSX Railroad. At the junction is the Effingham Amtrak station. At one time this station served the former Baltimore & Ohio passenger trains, including the National Limited, which later was operated by Amtrak. Currently, only passenger trains operate on the Canadian National lines, former Illinois Central.
