It is in the northwestern portion of the county. Alton is served by U.S. 67, Illinois 3, Illinois 100, Illinois 111, Illinois 140, Illinois 143, Illinois 255, Mississippi River, Union Pacific Railroad, and Amtrak. Alton's bistory dates far back in time to early Native American settlements. It became a stop for French traders. By 1818, a ferry service was started across the Mississippi River. In 1858, Alton was the site of one of the Lincoln-Douglas Debates. Illinois first pennitentiary was built in Alton. During the American Civil War, many Confederate prisoners were held at Alton. In 1863 & 1864, a Small Pox epidemic broke out resulting in many prioner deaths. A mass grave of Confederate soilders whom died of Small Pox is on the northside of town. Alton was home to Robert Wadlow. He is the tallest man ever. Today a life like statue of him is in town. Over the years, Alton has been plaqued with many floods. The grain elivator downtown mark the water levels from different floods. |
