Currently, Illinois State Route 336 is a north-south extention of I-172, near Quincy, in Adams County, to south of Carthage, along Illinois State Route 94. At Carthage it turns east-west and runs with U.S. Rt. 136 to the southwest side of Macomb.
Before I-72 was extended from Springfield to Hannibal, MO, IL St Rt 336 ran from near the Adams/Pike County Line, where it met with U.S. Rt. 36. When I-72 was extended, the section of IL St Rt 336 from U.S. 36 (I-72) to U.S. Rt. 24, on the northeast side of Quincy, was pulled back. The 2003-2004 Illinois State Map shows IL St Rt 336 running to a junction with IL St Rt 94 near Denver. As of July, 2004 the highway ran to just south of Carthage. Pictures of the current end point are below. The 2010 Illinois State Map has IL St Rt 336 running to Macomb. IL St Rt 336 in June, 2010, had it's end point at U.S. Rt. 136 and the BNSF Railway. Traffic is using the northbound off ramp to exit the highway and the southbound using the southbound on ramp. An underpass for IL St Rt 336 main line under the BNSF Railway exists.
As of June, 2018, IL St Rt 336 was extened from an interchange with U.S. Rt. 136 on the southwest side of Macomb, to a partial built interchange with U.S. Rt. 67 on the northside of Macomb. From the U.S. Rt. 136 interchange on the southwest side of Macomb, to U.S. Rt. 67 on the northside of Macomb, IL St Rt 336 is a two lane undivided highway. There is no bridge for southbound lanes over the La Monie River, but overpasses across the expressway in this portion are built for two southbound lanes to be built in the future. At U.S. Rt. 67, IL St Rt 336 will eventually continue over U.S. Rt. 67. As of June, 2019, all traffic is forced off at this interchange.
The "336 Update", the newsletter form the Route 336 Coalition, for Spring 2004 stated that the house version of the Transportation Bill contained $3 million for IL St Rt 336 from Macomb to Peoria.
Like most major highway projects, there are groups formed for both side of it. The 336 Coalition (for the highway) was formed in 1998. Recently, Citizens Against 336 was formed. They say there is no need for a new highway through Fulton County. The 336 Coalition states that it has been about 75 years since Fulton County got any type of new highway. It is the largets county in the state without a four-lane highway. They go one to point out that Fulton County month after month has the largest unemployment rate in the State of Illinois. Illinois State Route 336 would bring commerce and jobs to the area. IDOT points out the highway is still atleast 10 years away. In letters submitted to IDOT, about 80% have been positive of the Illlinois State Route 336 extention from Macomb to Peoria.*
U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood has brought some of the $44 million transportation dollars to Central Illinois. Of this, #3.6 million will be used to begin work on IL St Rt 336 from Macomb to Peoria.**
