Interstate 181

Interstate 181 is a north-south spur highway connecting Kingspot and Johnson City to I-81. These two cities are part of the region know as the "Tri-Cities", includeing Bristol, VA & TN. As of August 5, 2003, Interstate 181 south of Interstate 81 is now Interstate 26. All pictures below are on the section of I-181 that is now I-26.

On Monday, August 8, 2005 the Kingsport Times-News reported that Interstate 181 will be renumber I-26. This eliminates I-181 from the Interstate Highway System.

Beginning the week of March 5, 2007, the Tennessee Department of Transportation will begin changing all the signage along former I-181 to reflect that the highway is now I-26. All mileage signs, interstate shileds, and exit numbers will be adjusted. This will place the highways in standards with the Federal Highway Administation's west to east mileage designation requirements.*
