As the National Road enters Illinois from Indiana it follows an old path of U.S. 40, north of Interstate 70/U.S. 40 on Illiana Drive. Aprox. one mile west of the state line, U.S. 40 follows the path of the National Road. Between I-70, and the City of Marshall, there are a few old sections of the National Road. One is marked as a short side trip. Just east of Marshall, the National Road leaves U.S. 40 and passes through Downtown Marshall; as U.S. 40 bypasses the city to the north. Dowtown Marshall is home to many murals, the worlds largest gaval, and an old stone bridge.

The National Road crosses Cumberland County across the southeastern portion of the county. Like the other parts of Illinois, the National Road follows the U.S. Rt. 40, and Interstate 70 corridor. Most of the National Road is part of or can be seen from U.S. Rt. 40. At Greenup, there are some unique retro looking downtown shops. West of Greenup is a covered bridge across the Embrass River. U.S. 40 bypasses the main parts of Greenup and Jewett; while the National Road goes through the town. In Jewett there is an old bell from a former schoolhouse.
