Indianapolis to Illinois



Hendricks County

While still in Metro-Indianapolis, the National Road leaves Marion County and enters Henricks County along U.S. 40.



Putnam County

At the Putnam/Henricks County Line, the National Road leaves U.S. 40 and follows Indiana 240 to the west. This is at an intersting triangle intersection that sees Indiana 240 not start until the road crosses Indiana 75. From Indiana 75, the road follows Indiana 240 to Greencastle. Greencastle is the county seat for Putnam County. From Greenville, the National Road heads southwest along Jackson Street/Manhattan Road to rejoin U.S. 40 at Manhattan.

Clay County

In Clay County, the road follows U.S. 40 from the Clay/Putnam County Line to the westside fo Brazil. Along the road, it passes the Clay COunty Courthouse, as well as a large Great Dane at the Great Dane factory.

Vigo County

The National Road enters Vigo County from Putnam County at Cloverland and follows U.S. 40 west into Terre Haute. As the National Road reaches Terre Haure, U.S. 40 heads south along with Indiana 46; the National Road continues west along Wabash Avenue into Terre Haute.

As the road enters Terre Haute it passes the Old National Road Filling Station. This is north of the intersection where U.S. 40 heads south.

At downtown Terre Haute the National Road splits into two seperate city streets. Eastbound uses, Ohio Street; while Westbound uses Cherry Street.

In downtown Terre Haute such sites include the Terre Haute Childrens Museum, a statue of former NBA star Larry Bird, the Vigo County History Museum, and many of the city's Coke bottle displays. Some of these displays are outside of downtown, but most are at downtown.

Just west of downtown Terre Haute, the road passes the Vigo County Courthouse just before crossing the Wabash River and heading west into West Terre Haure.

EB National Road west of the Wabash River.

At West Terre Haute, the National Road follows National Avenue. National Avenue flows traffic on and off directly to Interstate 70 and U.S. 40. Just before the itnerchange with I-70/U.S. 40, the National Road moves to Illiana Drive. This is on the northside of the interstate highway. Illiana Drive continues the National Road west to the Illinois/Indiana State Line.
