The City of Galesburg is the county seat of Knox County. It is home to Knox College and Carl Sandburg College. George Washington Gale came here to start a manual labor college, which became Knox College. The Chicago, Burlington, & Quincy railroad was the first railroad through town. They built a sorting yard here. Several years later the Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe Railroad came through town. Both lines are now owned by the BNSF Railway, which is the largest employer in town. Galesburg is served by Interstate 74, U.S. 34, U.S. 150, Illinois 41, Illinois 110, Illinois 164, Amtrak, and the BNSF Railway.
