The Macarthur Bridge is the river crossing between St. Louis, Missouri, and Venice, Illinois. U.S. 66 used this from 1929-1937. This followed the same path as the Chain of Rocks Bridge up to Illinois 111 at Mitchell. U.S. 66 follows Illinois 111 south to Collinsville Road. U.S. 66 turns right onto Collinsville Road. Once in East St. Louis, U.S. 66 turns in to 9th Street and heads south to Missouri Avenue/Illinois 15. U.S. 66 moves over one block to 10th Street at Missouri Avenue. Then heads south on 10th Street and runs to a dead end. This is where U.S. 66 would have joined the Macarthur Bridge. Today the bridge is for rail traffic only. It is mostly used by Union Pacific Rail traffic.

Northern Madison County
In Northern Madison County the segments of U.S. 66 listed in the Springfield to Staunton section rejoin. This includes the one that follows Illinois 4 from Springfield, via Carlinville. The path that follows Interstate 55, via Litchfield. Plus, the path that goes through Livingston. All three paths join with Illinois 4, north of the mile 33 interchange on Interstate 55. U.S. 66 turns from Illinois 4 and joins the west Frontage Road at the interchange with Interstate 55 and Illinois 4.
